Joel has always wanted to open his own agency, but, life happens. He went to art school, got his first agency job, then the next, and so on. Some work excited and inspired him, and some work just paid the bills. We were busy—too busy to ask why some projects were so much more fulfilling than others.
Then, a few years ago, Joel shared with me a book that really resonated with him. Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone To Take Action by Simon Sinek changed our thinking. From that first conversation, we began to frame things differently: What is that company’s “why”? What is this nonprofit’s “why”? What is our “why”?
“Everything you say and everything you do has to prove what you believe.” — Simon Sinek, Start With Why
Looking back, I see groundwork. Lots and lots of groundwork. Our mindset changed. Our circumstances changed. We moved from the Midwest to the East Coast. Ultimately, we reached the point where we care less about what other people think of us and care more about who we are. We found our own “why.”
We have set upon a journey to do more and to be more. One of the definitions of “ascribe” is to regard a quality as belonging to. We want to become who we ascribe to be: Joel and Mia—deeply passionate about life, relationships, good design, and good causes. That, my friends, is why we do what we do.
What is your “why”? Give us a call and we will help you find it and shout it out.
